INDEX

[940] Gordon Sparling was born on August 13, 1900, at Toronto, Ont. He joined the Ontario Motion Picture Bureau in 1924 after graduating from the University of Toronto. He moved to New York to work in Paramount's Astoria Studios in 1929. In 1931, Sparling returned to Canada to become head of production at Associated Screen News in Montreal. Sparling spent three years in London during the Second World War, where he was in charge of the headquarters section of the Canadian Army Film and Photo Unit, supervising production of propaganda and training films and issues of the Canadian Army newreel. He returned to ASN in 1946 and remained until 1957 when the prodution department closed. He did freelance work for one year and then joined the National Film board in 1958. He officially retired in 1966 but remained active in researching and writing the history of Canadian film. Sparling died in Toronto on February 19, 1994.
