Rev. George Sparling
Memorial service for Rev. George Sparling will be at 4 p.m., June 22, 2005 at Schweitzer United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bob Casady officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel in Springfield.
Interment will be in Miller Memorial Gardens at 1:30 p.m., June 22, 2005.
Rev. Sparling was born Aug. 13, 1918 in Muskogee, Okla. to George Ernest Sparling and Hattie Lark Sparling. He married Lucille Dilday. Rev. Sparling died June 19, 2005.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; brother, Col. Walter Eugene Sparling and wife, Carolyn, Houston, Texas; son Bruce and wife, Cindy; daughter, Jan Sparling Herring and husband, Lyndon; grandson, Dr. Jeff Sparling and wife, Carrie; and great-granddaughter, Kate; grandson, David Sparling and wife, Crystal.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Mary Janet Sparling and Lark Dull.
Rev. Sparling served Methodist churches in the Springfield area while completing his undergraduate work at Drury. After completing seminary at Southern Methodist University, he began his regular ministry in Deering. He then served Salem. From there he served Missouri United Methodist churches in De Soto, Joplin, Sedalia, Liberty and Poplar Bluff, before being appointed District Superintendent, St. Louis South District. Rev. Sparling retired from regular service in St. James after 50 years as a United Methodist pastor.
Rev. Sparling will lie in state from 6 to 8 p.m., today (Tues.) at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
