Notes: Born April 26th 1882, in Punjab, India, the son of Lieutenant Colonel J.P. Sparling, I.A., of Westward Ho. He was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh (1895-December 1900), and at R.M.C. Sandhurst (1901). In 1902 he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Norfolk Regiment and was promoted to Lieutenant in the 57th Wilde's Rifles, Indian Army, in 1904, to Captain 1911, and to Major in the Royal Marines in February 1915. He was wounded in action in 1908 whilst serving on the Northwest Frontier of India. In 1913 he was serving with the Burma Police.
