There is no sign of John in the 1900 US Census.
There is an index entry at the St Louis Obituary index (http://www.deathindexes.com/missouri/obituaries.html) for the Post Dispatch for John Sparling 12 mar 1912 pg 14. Burial Notice 14 mar pg 20
There are two death registrations that may belong to this couple. Charles A Sparling (1873-03 mar 1876) Death occurred at 2610 Sarah Street which is the same street where John's brother Julius lived at his death and where his widow lived the following year but Charles is tou early to be theirs. Mary Sparling (1882-21 nov 1883) died on Minnesota Ave which is where John and Rosetta lived in 1880. Both children are buried in the same plot in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
