County of Cedar } ss.
On this 19th day of July A.D. One thousand eight hundred and seventy eight personally appeared before me, a Clerk of the District within and for the County and State aforesaid, W. T. Hepner residing at Tipton County of Cedar and State of Iowa aged 45 years and Jno. E. Short residing at Knox County of Starke and State of Indiana aged 41 years[,] persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say they are well acquainted with Mary Hepner, widow of Mathias Hepner who was a soldier in the war of 1812 and they know her to be the widow of said soldier, Mathias Hepner and that the said Mary Hepner has never remarried since the death of her said husband Mathias Hepner, and they further say that they are able to make this affidavit from the fact that they were intimately acquainted with the said Mary Hepner and her said husband Mathias Hepner and have so remained acquainted with said Mary Hepner since the death of her said husband, and they further say that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.
