David Smith Hepner, Declaration for Pension, Civil War

 

DECLARATION FOR PENSION

Act of May 1, 1920

State of Iowa, County of Cedar, ss:

On this 7 day of November, 1925, before me, the undersigned, personally appeared David S. Hepner, who makes the following declaration as an application for pension under provisions of the act of Congress approved May 1, 1920:

That he is 83 8/12 years of age; that he was born March 5, 1843 at Champaign, Ohio.

That he is the identical David S. Hepner who ENLISTED Sept 10, 1861, at [blank] under the name of David S. Hepner, in D Coy. 29" Reg. Indiana Inf., and was honorably DISCHARGED 28" Sept, 1864, at Chattanoga, Tenn, having served the United States in the Civil War.

That he also served -none-.

That otherwise than herein stated he was not employed in the United States military or naval service.

That his personal description at time of first enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet 5 inches; complexion Light, color of eyes Blue; color of hair Light; that his occupation was Farmer.

That since leaving the service he has resided at Tipton, Iowa and his occupation has been Farmer till January 1913.

That he requires the regular personal aid and attendance of another person and has required such aid and dependence since 1912 on account of the following disabilities: Stiffness of arms and shoulders causing immobility of same past a certain position (Cannot raise arms above head). Gets breathless on least exertion. Has diabetes. Has to have help also in dressing.

That he did not serve in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States between April 6, 1917, and July 2, 1921, or at any time during said period.

That no member of his family served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States between April 6, 1917, and July 2, 1921, or at any time during said period.

That he has Yes applied for pension under Original No. [227.072 lined out]; that he is Yes a pensioner under Certificate No. 227.072

Subscribed and sworn to before me this 10th day of November, 1925 and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration were fully made known and explained to the applicant before swearing, including the words [blank] erased, and the words [blank] added; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.

No. 4. Were you previously Married?

Answer. No

 

No. 5. Have you any children under 16 years of age living? If so, state their names and the dates of their birth.

Answer. No
