A Quick Look at My CAIN Line

WILLIAM CAINE bought land called "Richardson's Plain" in Baltimore County Maryland in 1686. The land was located on the Gunpowder Falls River in what is now the city of Baltimore, Maryland. The only known child of William Caine was a son John Caine.

JOHN CAINE, along with three of his sons, John Caine Jr, Hugh Caine, and James Caine were mentioned in Scharff's "History of Baltimore City and County" as part of a group of people who were to receive land in disputed territory between Maryland and Pennsylvania in 1736. The name was spelled "Kaine" in this accounting.

HUGH CAINE, along with his brother JAMES CAINE, migrated to Orange County North Carolina around 1750/60. It was about this time that the "e" was dropped from "Caine" and the normal spelling became "Cain". Hugh had children: William Cain, Hugh Cain , Jacob Cain, Allen Cain, Ann Cain, John Cain, Margaret Cain and James Cain.

WILLIAM CAIN along with wife Rachel, moved to Hancock County Georgia sometime in the 1780's. The children of William and Rachel were: John Cain, James Cain, Nancy Cain, Frances (Fanny) Cain, Margaret Cain, Allen Cain, and William Cain, Jr. About 1806, William Cain Sr, with most of his family moved to the Natchez District of Mississippi in what is now Wilkinson County Mississippi.

WILLIAM CAIN, JR. Very little is known of William Cain, Jr. He, along with David Irwin and David's wife Frances (Fanny) Cain, obtained a passport in 1807 to pass through the Creek nation to the Natchez district of Mississippi where they joined the rest of the family.

ARCHIBALD W. CAIN (c1799-1869). It is not known for certain that Archibald Cain was the son of William Cain, Jr but evidence points to it. Archibald was born c1799 in Georgia. In 1828, he married Sarah Ann Logan in Wilkinson County Mississippi. Sarah died after giving birth to one child, William L Cain. Archibald married next, in 1831 in Wilkinson County, Julia Ann Cox the daughter of David Cox and Sabrina Glanton. Arch and Julia had the following children: Henry T Cain (died as infant ), Franklin F Cain, Fountain Fairchild Cain, Lemuel Lafayette Cain, Lethia Cain, Carlton C Cain, Archie A Cain, Azaline Cain, Sarah J Cain, and Franklin Cain. In 1834, Arch and Julia moved to Amite County Mississippi where they lived until 1858. In 1858, the family pulled up roots and moved to Caldwell Parish Louisiana. Arch died in Caldwell parish in 1869.

LEMUEL LAFAYETTE CAIN (1842-1909), along with brothers William L and Fountain Fairchild, served in the Third Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War and were all present at the surrender of Vicksburg. After the war, Lemuel married Mary Jane East, daughter of Tarlton and Mary L East. In 1870, Lemuel and Mary Jane were in Harrison County Texas where he was a carpenter. In 1880, the family was in Panola county Texas. Lemuel and Mary Jane had the following children: William Eugene Cain, Charles Quantrelle Cain, Floyd Vaughn Cain, Alda Ella Cain, Freddie Sion Cain, Mary Lila Cain, and Carl Crawford Cain. In approximately 1894, Lemuel and most of the family moved to the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma (now Jefferson County). Lemuel died there in 1909 and Mary Jane in 1923.

FLOYD VAUGHN CAIN (1874-1939) married in 1896, Cora Lee Woolley, the daughter of Elbert P Woolley and Nancy Mary Boyles. Floyd and Cora had children: Herschell Howard Cain, Etha Cain (died infant), Ela Cain, and Maureen Cain. Cora died in 1922 and Floyd married Mitty Guest. Floyd died in 1939.

HERSCHELL HOWARD CAIN (1899 - 1956) is my father.
