From early childhood, Mary's greatest interests in life were singing and working in the church. After marriage, Mercedes and her husband, Norval HILLYARD, lived in a mill house in Providence, MD. where their two children were born. Mercedes was active in the Rock Presbyterian Church. In 1933, the family purchased a home near Providence Corner where they resided until Norval died. Mercedes conyinued living in the family home until August of 1981, when ill health caused her move to Oxford Manor, a Presbyterian retirement home at Oxford, PA. She attended Goldey-Beacom Business College and took to practical nursing. After training at West Baltimore General Hospital and Lutheran Hospital she became a Registered Nurse in 1943. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps assigned to the "Frances Y. Slanger". a converted luxury liner, "Saturnia", which made five trips to Europe. Pearl was discharged in December 1945. In 1986 Pearl was still living in St. Petersburg.

OBITUARY - THOMPSON

Adaline BOWLSBY was born March 15, 1837, in Ohio. She came to Wisconsin with her parents when six years of age. In September, 1858, she was united in marriage with Mr. Samuel THOMPSON, who died on October 15, 1892. She had lived in Darlington, at 111 West River Street, for the past forty-three years.

Mrs. THOMPSON passed away at her home in Darlington on October 14, 1925. She leaves surviving her, nine children, viz: Edith THOMPSON, of Waukesha; John S. THOMPSON, of Moscow, Idaho; Robert M. THOMPSON, of Darlington; Ashton I. THOMPSON, of Kasson, Minnesota; Mrs. Cora VOGEL of Newell, IA; Livingston A. THOMPSON, of Waukesha; Mrs. Ethel BARNES, of Chicago; and Mrs, Eunice PEASELEE, of Waukesha.

The funeral was held from the home on Saturday afternoon, the services being private, and conducted by Rev. Wallace Essingham, pastor of the Congregational church. The interment was in the Union Grove cemetery.

Mrs. THOMPSON was one of the very early settlers of this section and she lived to see nearly all of her old-time friends pass away. She was a kind and loving mother and a good citizen.
She was buried on 17 October 1925 at Union Grove Cem. in Darlington, Lafayette Co., WI.¹¹⁸¹

According to the 1850 census of Gratiot, WI she lived with her mother in the household of her older brother, Manuel. Information on her family was given in Mrs. Matty PENNYCUFF's memoirs of the BOWLBY family.
