William was born in Pittsburgh, PA according to his death certificate from information given by his wife. His autobiography and census reports give Ohio as his birth place. Though William had no more than six months of formal education, he wrote a 57-page manuscript of his Civil War experiences in his latter years. The family information is incidental in his writing, and known to be inaccurate in some instances. One example of his inaccuracy is that he says his grandfather died in 1820 on the way to visit his father in Indiana, then later, says his father did not move to Indiana until 1842. His early memories are of his difficult life on his father's farm in Indiana. He enlisted for the Civil War when he was eighteen on 5 AUG 1862 and tells of his three years of arduous battles and illnesses. He says he returned home 5 AUG 1865. William's family left Indiana and settled on government land in Folk Co., Nebraska around the year 1872 according to his son's biographer. After his marriage in 1841, Wilson settled in New York, engaged in the mercantile trade. He moved to Cincinnati, OH, where he studied medicine at the Eclectic Institute of Medicine, and was graduated in 1845. He practiced medicine in Fairfield, IN, for about seven years. In 1852, he purchased a prairie outfit and spent six months on the Oregon Trail, arriving in Portland late in 1852. In the spring of 1853, he purchased three hundred and twenty acres of land in South Tualatin (now Cornelius) and became a farmer as well as a doctor. There were only two other doctors in the vicinity at that time. In 1860, he set up practice in Forest Grove while still retaining his farm. His practice extended over the present county of Washington, which he traveled by horseback. In 1875, he added to his medical practice in the purchase of a drug store in Forest Grove. Dr. Bowlby was a member of the last Oregon State Senate, and served as president of that body. During the Civil War, Dr. Bowlby was appointed Examining Surgeon of the Army by President Lincoln. He was Republican elector for Oregon in the first election of President Grant. In 1871, President Grant appointed him Collector of Internal Revenue in Portland, a position he held until 1874. Dr. Bowlby practiced medicine until a year before his death in 1895. He was described as the leading citizen of Washington Co. for 40 years, and his life was rated as one of the most memorable of the pioneers of Oregon.

BOWLBY, DR. WILSON, of Forest Grove, was born in Fairfield, New Jersey, in 1818. In 1852 he came to Oregon and settled in Washington County in the practice of medicine. He has been an active Republican from the foundation of the party. He was a member of the state conventions of 1860, 1862 and 1864, and was a member of both the house and the senate of the state legislature for several terms, being one pf the first Republicans to sit in that body.

WILSON BOWLBY, M.D. (11) [Samuel (8)] was born in New Jersey in 1820, married Lydia B. Jones, was engaged in trade and commerce in New York City for a while, and then moved with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied medicine at the Eclectic Institute of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Wilson and his growing family moved to Fairfield, Franklin County, Indiana. After practicing medicine in Fairfield for about seven years, Dr. Wilson and his family traveled by covered wagon along the Oregon Trail in 1852 to Washington County, Oregon, where he continued practicing medicine, farmed, owned a pharmacy, and served in the last territorial and first state legislature.

WILSON BOWLBY. Among the pleasant and truly successful men in Nezperce, we should mention Mr. BOWLBY, whose genial manner and good business ability and public spirit have placed in a prominent and popular position. He is the owner and operator of a fine drugstore in Nezperce and is a leader in his line.

Wilson BOWLBY was born in Oregon, on the July 7, 1867, being the son of Theodore F. and Sophia A. (ADAMS) BOWLBY. The father was a native of Indiana and crossed the plains with ox teams with his father; a physician seeking his health in the west. The family settled near Forest Grove and took land and the doctor opened a drug store in the town. Our subject was reared on the farms adjoining this town, gained his schooling there and learned the drug business from his grandfather. His grandfather was speaker of the territorial senate for seven years and a prominent man there. 'The mother of Wilson was a native of Ohio, crossed the plains with her parents in an early day and was married to Mr. BOWLBY in Vancouver, Washington. In addition to the college course in the university at Forest Grove, Wilson studied dentistry for three years and later bought the drug store of his grandfather. This was in 1887 and that was the arena of his labors until August 1896, when he came to the reservation, bought a relinquishment, and then practiced dentistry in Nezperce for two years. The farm is near town and is still the family home. Then Mr. BOWLBY bought the drug business of Eitzen & Towell, the pioneer drug store of the town, and building a commodious structure for the business, Mr. BOWLBY has continued it since with ever increasing patronage.

Mr. BOWLBY is popularly affiliated in fraternal circles, being a member of the I. 0.0. F., Morning Star, No. 56, of the K. of P., in Forest Grove; of the W. W., in Nezperce, while he and his wife are members of the Methodist church. Politically, Mr. BOWLBY is a staunch Republican and is always interested in any movements that are for the benefit of the county or town.

On May 4, 1891 Mr. BOWLBY married Miss Bertha E., daughter of Rev. J. W. and Sarah H. (RICHIE) SPANGLER, the wedding ceremony occurring in Hillsboro, Oregon. Mrs. BOWLBY came to Oregon in 1882 with her parents. The father is a Methodist preacher located in Latah, Washington, while his wife was state organizer for the W. C. T. U. of Oregon. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. BOWLBY, namely, Helen M., Ethel M. and Bert W. Mr. BOWLBY has five brothers and three sisters, Charles H., Hillsboro, Oregon; Theodore A., in Tilamook creamery; Randolph, Fred and George, all on dairy ranches and in partnership with Charles, and their mother resides with them; Emma M., wife of William PITMAN, in Hillsboro, Oregon; Lois and Stella, living with their mother. Mrs. BOWLBY has two brothers, James W., superintendent of Bradstreets agency in Seattle; Walter W., at Latah, Washington.
