Among the loose papers tucked in the pages of the docket of "Joseph Kitchell ... One of his Magesty's Justices," on file at the New Jersey State Archives, is a memorandum concerning a debt which ends with the notation: "George Bowlby Deseased ye 23 of october ye 1772 and this a bouve menchened debt ware before his Deceas."

MENDHAM--Services for George H. Bowlby , 87, of E. Main St., retired salesman, will be tomorrow, 2 PM. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Dover, of which he had been a 50-year member.
He died Friday Sept. 11, 1959, at Morristown Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Asbury Park Mr. Bowlby moved to Mendham nine years ago from Dover where he spent most of his life. He had been a salesman for furniture and floor covering stores in Dover.
Surviving are his wife Gertrude; two brothers, Rev. Harry L. of Poughkeepsie, NY and Roscoe of Elizabeth.

It reports that, in 1850, George and his brother, Sylvester, were employed as shoemakers when they followed the gold rush as far as Sherman, Texas, where they were stopped by the army because of Indian raids. Sylvester remained in Texas, but George returned to New Hampton where he spent the remainder of his life. He first prospered as a miller between 1860 and 1870, then set up a general store and became the local postmaster.
