He enlisted in the Army to serve in WWI, attained the rank of sergeant. He was a member of Co. B 301 BN. 305 Brig. Heavy Tank Company. His outfit saw action in France. After the war Clay rode the rails like a hobo, in his quest for work. This took him to many places, such as helping to build an army camp in Virginia to working in the automobile factories of Detroit. Later, after his marriage to Anna he went back to work in the mines. At night after work, he built the family home by the light of his mining lamp, often held by Anna. He later worked as a pattern maker for Harbision-Walker refractories. His hobby was woodworking.

James Burton UNDERCOFLER914 was born on 20 August 1922 in Woodland, Bradford Twp., Clearfield Co., PA. He died on 1 January 1990 at the age of 67 in West Decatur, Clearfield Co., PA.

Jim was born in Woodland, Pennsylvania and attended the local schools, he graduated from Clearfield High School. While in high school he played on the football team, this team had a record of 10-0-1 in regular season, but lost, 12-0 in the play off against Blythe Township. As a note, it would be 54 years before this team would again make the playoffs. After high school he worked as a carpenter in the maintence department for Harbinson-Walker Refractorys. He enlisted in the Air Force October 22, 1942, but he was assigned to the 329th. Infantry, 83rd. Divison. Corporal Undercofler served with this outfit thru the invasion of Normandy and most of the battles of Europe, until action in Nice, France, where he was hit in the knee with shrapnel, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After recovering from the wound, he was assigned to the Ninth Air Force, were he stayed for the next six months until his discharge on December 20, 1945. After the war, Jim worked first, as an automotive mechanic, and later as a tool and die maker for Piper Aircraft. He was an avid outdoors man, loving both hunting and fishing. Some of his other hobbies were gunsmithing and gardening. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service to his country during World War II. Other military awards that Jim held were the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Coduct Medal, Expert Sharp Shooter, World War II Medal, and the European Medal of Combat.

In 1943 she went to work in an aircraft factory in New York State, stayed there until November of 1944 when she enlisted in the U.S. Navy. She became a Medic, held the rank of Petty Officer 3rd. class. She tended the wounded coming back from the South Pacific at the Naval Hospital in San Diego California. Rose was discharged from the Navy in May of 1946. After returning home she worked as a dential assistant for Dr. BYRD and later for Dr. TODD. Rose enjoys several hobbies, crafting dried flowers, quilting, and painting.

After the war he worked as a pattern maker and later as a boiler inspector. His hobbies were furniture making, hunting, fishing, and he was a master gardener.
