James Owen SEYMOUR710 was born on 22 April 1855 in Homer, Licking Co., OH.710 He died on 21 August 1944 at the age of 89 in Rantoul, Franklin Co., KS.

Taken from a newspaper article, August 22, 1944

J O Seymour, Rantoul Pioneer, Is Dead

James Owen SEYMOUR, 89, one of Franklin Count's best known retired farmers, died last night at his home, a half mile south of Rantoul. He had lived on the same farm since he was 2 1/2 years old, traveling there with his parents Benjamin Jones and Ann (TULLOSS) SEYMOUR in a covered wagon from Ohio. He had been in failing health several years and was seriously ill for 10 days.

The funeral is to be Thursday from Ruhamah Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Rev. W. A. Elliott of Ottawa First Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Alfred Waln, will conduct the services at 2pm. Interment is to be in Ruhamah Cemetery.

He was born in Licking County, Ohio, April 22, 1855. On March 29, 1888 he was married at Le Loup to Bird Wilson, a school teacher. She died November 8, 1940. Surviving relatives are three sons and three daughters, James Owen SEYMOUR, Rantoul, B. Mac SEYMOUR, Ottawa; Fred SEYMOUR, Clifton; Mrs. E.L. STRATTON, Muncie; Miss Harriett SEYMOUR, Ottawa High School teacher and Miss Fannie SEYMOUR of the home, and 10 grandchildren. One of his grandsons, Harold SEYMOUR is serving with the US Army in England.

The first night the Benjamin SEYMOUR family spent in Kansas was at the Tulloss property, near Rantoul. Next day Mr. SEYMOUR bought the cabin and land of a squatter who had preempted land from the Ottawa Indians, then occupying this territory. The father died the following March, leaving the mother and eight small children, and she began the task of rearing them. Among her duties she served as postmistress, having the "office" in her home. With all her interests she, had time for religion, and the son James O. SEYMOUR, often rode horseback with his mother to services at Osawatomie.

J O SEYMOUR recalled Quantrill's raid on Lawrence and many historic events in the progress of this community. Ottawa had not been founded in those early days, and the nearest trading point was Westport Landing, the beginning of Kansas City. As he grew up, he made several trips to Westport Landing to drive cattle across the open range, to market, taking three days. Long after most men retired, he continued work in his garden and other farm duties. As long as he was able he made weekly trips to Ottawa to gather "the news" and visit with his many friends. He enjoyed walking and often, in former years, made the half-mile trip into Rantoul on foot, just for the exercise. He was instrumental in organizing the Rantoul Rural High School.

James Owen (Jim) Seymour

James Owen (Jim) SEYMOURwas born February 1, 1893, the son of J. O. and Bird Wilson SEYMOUR on the family farm south of Rantoul and never lived over 1 1/4 miles away during his entire life. He passed away March 28, 1981 after a brief illness.

During his early years he farmed. He also hired out with his team of horses in the local oil and gas fields, often being the one to assemble 6 to 8 neighbors and teams needed to move the steam-powered drilling rig and its accompanying equipment between drilling sites.

In 1930, he bought the milk route from the Rantoul area to Bennett Creamery in Ottawa which he ran until his retirement. He also developed a back haul which consisted of most of the groceries, pop and ice cream for four stores and two restaurants. He was Rantoul's last iceman and would bring back anything customers along his route requested, which might range from feed to eye glasses or a matching spool of thread.

He was his own contractor for the house he lived in which was built on land which once belonged to a freed Negro slave. Most of the freed slave's original log house still stands.

During floods, neighbors in the river bottom north of Rantoul would wait until the last possible moment to move out. Receiving a call for help in the middle of the night, he would light a lantern, saddle the families' two horses which knew all the high ground in the river bottom, get a companion, and help lead them to the safety of higher ground.

He was a member and former trustee of Ruhamah Baptist Church, and a long-time member of both the Cutler Township Board and the Rantoul Rural High School District Board.

He was married to the former Ruth L. DAUGHARTHY July 18, 1929 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1979. She survives.
