1. GILES¹ MARTIN. Conflicting evidence states that Giles was born circa 1772.¹ He was born at Virginia in 1776.² He, son of William Martin and Delphia Walden, married Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, daughter of John Ingram and Elizabeth Chiles, on 13 Jan 1794 at Patrick County, Virginia.³ He, son of William Martin and Delphia Walden, married Sarah Arnold, daughter of John Arnold, in 1844 at Patrick County, Virginia. Giles died on 4 Aug 1850 at Patrick County, Virginia.⁴ His body was interred at Patrick County, Virginia, at Billy Martin Cemetery.⁵

Marriage license for Giles and Nancy obtained 8 Jan 1794.
Sarah Arnold Martin filed a widow's pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812. It states that Giles was drafted at Patrick County in February 1815 and served three months and 17 days. He was honorably discharged at Richmond on 19 Feb 1815. Apparently Giles was granted 40 acres of land 10 Feb 1854 which was disposed of before Sarah made application for pension.

Giles Martin first appears on the Patrick County personal property tax records in 1793. A well respected Martin researcher has tracked the tax records each year through 1837 showing Giles on the records each year except 1829, 1832, and 1834. As she has pointed out a person needed to be 21 to appear on the tax rolls. As William Martin appears next to Giles 1791 - 1803, it would appear that he is Giles father, and when Giles came of age in 1793 he first appears on the rolls indicating he would have been born c. 1772. Giles's occupation: farmer.
NANCY 'ANN' INGRAM was born circa 1775.⁶ Nancy died before 1844 at Patrick County, Virginia.⁶
      According to Marriages of Patrick County by Adams, Nancy Ingram married Giles Martin -- minister George Dodson. Surety: Thomas Bristow. She is listed as the daughter of John and Elizabeth Ingram.

      The Isaac Webb bible lists Nancy as the daughter of James Ingram. According to the Marriages of Patrick County by Lela C. Adams p. 103, Nancy Ingram daughter of James Ingram married Daniel Ross 24 July 1798. Surety: David Ross Witness: Alexander Ingram.
      February Court, 1803, Patrick County, recorded Deed book 2, page 186, John Ingram Sen leaves to his "daughter Anne Martin & Giles Martin her Husband" land on the Smith River "one hundred acres be the same more or less, including the plantation where on the said Giles Martin now lives." Signed 16 Feb 1803.
Children of Giles¹ Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram were as follows:

      i.   MARY 'POLLY'² MARTIN. Conflicting evidence states that Mary was born at Martinsville, Henry County, Virginia.⁷ She was born on 9 Jan 1795.⁸ She, daughter of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married William Banks, son of John Banks and Deborah Cassell, in 1815 at Patrick County, Virginia. Mary died on 14 Apr 1875 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 80.⁹ Her body was interred at Snake Creek, Carroll County, Virginia, at William Banks Cemetery.⁷

      The Giles Martin family bible lists Mary's birth as 8 Jan. Her grave marker lists her birth as 9 Jan. (Jackson, Martin Family History, p.29 & 31).
WILLIAM BANKS was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 23 Oct 1779.⁷ William died on 10 Mar 1866 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 86.⁷ His body was interred at Snake Creek, Carroll County, Virginia, at William Banks Cemetery.⁷
      "William and Mary came from Floyd County, Va. to Carroll County, Va., in search of a mill site." (Tillinghast, Some Things I Learned)
      "Spending the first 18 years of their married life in Floyd County, they bought a farm on Big Snake Creek in 1833 and moved to it. On Big Snake Creek William farmed and ran a mill." (Quesinberry, Martin Family, Carroll County p.3)
      The 1850 Census lists William as born in New Jersey.
     The Martin Family states that this family came from Patrick County. William's occupation: farmer.

ii. MARTHA MARTIN was born at Patrick County, Virginia, circa 1797.¹⁰ She, daughter of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Jacob Graham or Grayham (Grimes), son of Jacob Graham and (--?--) Terry, on 14 Sep 1812 at Patrick County, Virginia.¹¹ Martha died after 1860.

Martha has been listed by various researchers as the daughter of Giles Martin and Elizabeth Ingram. The Giles Martin bible lists all the children except Martha. She has been listed by various researchers as the daughter of William, father of Giles. The deed at Floyd lists the children of Jacob Graham as the grandchildren of Giles Martin. William Martin had a brother Giles who is possible the father of Martha. The marriage register lists the minister as Lewis Foster. There seems to be no record showing the earlier Giles living in Patrick. The deed listing the children of Jacob Graham states Giles of Patrick County. If Martha is the child of Giles and Nancy Ingram it should be noted although she is not listed in the Giles Martin Bible, neither are Giles or Nancy. There are marriages listed in Floyd for persons with the same names as the Graham children, but so far research has not proven these marriages to be for this family.

The 1850 Census finds Martha living with her son James. Also living with James and his wife are his siblings: Daniel, Permelia, and Ann, and nephew Jackson. The 1860 Census for Floyd finds Martha as head of household with Floyd, Martha M., Permelia, Ann, and grandson Jackson living with her.

The 1860 census also finds her with a land value of $2000 and a property value of $629 which was substantial at the time.
JACOB GRAHAM OR GRAYHAM (GRIMES). Jacob died in Apr 1850 at Floyd County, Virginia.⁵
Spelled Grimes on marriage return and bond, but Jacob signed his mark. Deeds recorded in Floyd County record the name as Grayham or Graham. The children with the exception of Jackson were listed on a deed dated 28 Mar 1842 at Floyd which reads children "of said Jacob Graham of the 3rd part all grand children of the said Giles Martin." Marriages can be found for what appear to be most of these children.

iii. PATSY MARTIN. Conflicting evidence states that Patsy was born at Patrick County, Virginia. She was born on 2 Sep 1797.⁸ She, daughter of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Jonathan Salmons in 1812 at Patrick County, Virginia. Patsy died in 1813.⁶

iv. DANIEL MARTIN was born on 27 Apr 1798.¹² Conflicting evidence states that Daniel was born at Patrick County, Virginia, on 27 Apr 1798. He, son of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Mary Jane 'Aunt Jinnie' Gardner, daughter of James Gardner and Tobitha (Tabitha) Martin, in 1825 at Grayson County, Virginia.¹³ Daniel died on 17 Oct 1881 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 83.¹⁴ His body was interred at Carroll County, Virginia, at Martin Cemetery.¹⁵

Daniel's birth date is recorded as 1798 and 1793. 1798 would be more in keeping with his parent's marriage.
MARY JANE 'AUNT JINNIE' GARDNER. Conflicting evidence states that Mary was born at Carroll County, Virginia.⁶ She was born on 22 Oct 1805.¹⁶ Mary died on 22 Oct 1891 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 86.¹⁷ Conflicting evidence states that she died at Carroll County, Virginia, on 26 Oct 1891.¹⁸ Her body was interred at , Carroll County, Virginia, at Martin Cemetery.¹⁵

v. SARAH 'SARY, SALLY' MARTIN was born on 14 Jun 1800.⁸

vi. NANCY LEONA 'ONEY' MARTIN. Conflicting evidence states that Nancy was born at Patrick County, Virginia.⁶ She was born on 4 Jan 1802.⁸ She, daughter of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married William M. Gardner, son of James Gardner and Tobitha (Tabitha) Martin, in 1820 at Patrick County, Virginia. Nancy died on 5 Sep 1873 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 71.¹⁹ Her body was interred at Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia, at James Gardner Cemetery.²⁰

There is confusion as to whom Oney was depending on the source. Oney married William Gardner, but some sources say she was Leona, some say she was Nancy.
WILLIAM M. GARDNER. Conflicting evidence states that William was born at Carroll County, Virginia.²¹ He was born on 5 Feb 1799.²⁰ William died on 29 Mar 1868 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 69.¹⁹ Conflicting evidence states that he died at Carroll County, Virginia, on 28 Apr 1868.¹⁸ His body was interred at Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia, at James Gardner Cemetery.²⁰

vii. JAMES B. MARTIN. Conflicting evidence states that James was born at Patrick County, Virginia.⁶ He was born on 6 Oct 1803.⁸ He, son of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Irene Bowman, daughter of Samuel Bowman and Elizabeth Harrell, in 1830.²² James died on 12 Feb 1882 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 78.²³ His body was interred at Carroll County, Virginia, at Bowman, Farris, Martin Cemetery.²⁰
IRENE BOWMAN was born at Carroll County, Virginia, on 25 May 1813.²⁴ Irene died on 5 Feb 1857 at age 43.²⁵ Conflicting evidence states that she died at Carroll County, Virginia, on 5 Feb 1859.¹⁸ Her body was interred at Carroll County, Virginia, at Bowman, Farris, Martin Cemetery.²⁵

viii. LEWIS MARTIN was born on 15 May 1804.⁸ He, son of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Roxy Ann Clark, daughter of John Clark Jr. and Elizabeth Wright, on 7 Dec 1834 at Patrick County, Virginia.⁶
ROXY ANN CLARK was born in 1814.⁶

      ix.   ISAAC PIERCE MARTIN was born on 9 Nov 1805.⁸ Conflicting evidence states that Isaac was born at Patrick County, Virginia, on 19 Nov 1806.²⁶ He, son of Giles Martin and Nancy 'Ann' Ingram, married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Peter Lee Smith and Martha Hancock, on 12 Jun 1827 at Henry County, Virginia.²⁷ Isaac died on 12 May 1865 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 58.²⁸ His body was interred at Carroll County, Virginia, at Floyd Webb Cem.²⁹

      According to Octavia Webb's bible, "Isaac Martin was a blacksmith and farmer and was owner of 8 negro slaves."
      "At the church meeting September 1871, Saturday before the first Sunday, Charity Martin (colored) was received into the church. According to her biographical she was an ex-slave. She joined the church by letter from New Hope Church. She was the only colored person ever received into Fellowship church due to the fact that there was no colored church near. She died in Pulaski County in December 1924 as Charity Martin Fulp. She was last purchased as a slave by Isaac Martin from Washington Gardner for the sum of $1,500.00."       "Grandmother Malesia's father was considered to be wealthy in his day and owned slaves. During the Civil War, his son Giles (a brother to Malesia) went into the war as a Captain. Grandfather Webb (Malesia's husband) was also in the war as lst Lieutenant and served under his brother-in-law Giles. Having money, Giles was able to afford nice uniforms. Grandmother Malesia wanted Grandfather Webb to look as good as her brother Giles. She obtained good material and made Grandfather's uniforms so that he would be dressed as nice as her brother."       Isaac Martin came to Carroll County settling on Big Reed Island. He acquired the Freemont farm adjoining the property of George Alderman in 1845. The families were apparently close.

      There have been stories about the close of the war when the confederates came to the community in 1864. It has been said they took all of Isaac Martin's horses and some of his other livestock. He was very fond of a saddle horse which soldiers took despite his urging that they leave this one thing for him.

      "He prospered well and was one of the few slaveholders in the Carroll area. He lost a great deal of his property during the Civil War. He lost a number of his relatives during the war also." (Quesinberry, Martin Family, Carroll County, p.7). Isaac's occupation: farmer.
ELIZABETH SMITH. Conflicting evidence states that Elizabeth was born at Patrick County, Virginia, on 16 Apr 1805.⁶ She was born at Henry County, Virginia, on 4 May 1806.³⁰ Elizabeth died on 23 Jan 1892 at Carroll County, Virginia, at age 85.³¹ Her body was interred at Carroll County, Virginia, at Floyd Webb Cem.²⁹

Elizabeth's grave marker reads January 22 or 23. It is difficult to read. Died at 91 yrs., 9 mos., and 2 days.

SARAH ARNOLD was born at Patrick County, Virginia, in 1811.³² Sarah died on 9 Mar 1901 at Patrick County, Virginia.⁶ Her body was interred at Patrick County, Virginia.³²
The pension board questioned why Sarah had signed her mark and then on a subsequent document had signed her name. Her reply - "She signed the declaration for bounty land warrant when her mother - one brother and two of her children had typhoid fever & no hope was entertained of the recovery of her mother or children. All were in the same house and she supposed she made her mark because she was in such a state of distress and nervous excitement she did not feel like she could write her name - and therefore made her mark. The signature to the declaration for pension is in her own handwriting." 7 Jun 1879
An examiner record dated 13 Aug 1888 states that Sarah Martin who is seventy-one year old resides at Mayo Forge, Va. with her son Sonny Martin. 2 July 1879 living with Jno. A. Martin.
2 Jul 1879 "I remember well that when my mother and brother had fever the neighbors were afraid of contracting the disease, and would not go into the house. I took my three children to my fathers (sic) to wait on the sick, and while I was there my children took the disease and were very ill for a long time." - Sarah Martin - all from pension records at the National Archives.
Children of Giles¹ Martin and Sarah Arnold were as follows:

i. SUSAN E.² MARTIN was born in 1843.³³ She, daughter of Giles Martin and Sarah Arnold, married (--?--) Hopkins.

"Am writing you in regards to an old widow lady Mrs. Susan Martin Hopkins now (84) eighty-four years of age living alone has no income of any kind, Whose father Giles Martin was a Lieut, in the War of 1812. Her mother Mrs. Sarah Martin drew a pension untill (sic) her death. Mrs. Susan M. Hopkins her daughter took care of her untill (sic) her death for (20) twenty years before her death. She was an invalid." (from letter on behalf of Mrs. Susan Martin Hopkins to Pension Bureau, May 12, 1927).

ii. ANDREW JACKSON MARTIN was born at Patrick County, Virginia, circa 1844.³ Conflicting evidence states that Andrew was born at Virginia circa 1852.³⁴ According to conflicting evidence, he married Lucinda Craddock at Patrick County, Virginia, on 14 Feb 1867.³⁵ He, son of Giles Martin and Sarah Arnold, married Lucinda Craddock, daughter of Matilda (Craddock), on 24 Feb 1867 at Patrick County, Virginia.³ Andrew died on 13 Apr 1932 at Stella, Patrick County, Virginia.³⁶ His body was interred at Patrick County, Virginia, at A.J. Martin Cem.³⁷

An A.J. Martin made application for a Civil War pension in 1905 stating he was 58 having been born in Henry County, Va. He stated he in Co. I, 6th VA Reg. and left after the surrender to Lee.
On the 1880 census, in addition to his immediate family, also living with him was his mother-in-law, Matilda Craddock and an aunt, Susanna Martin age 75, born in Virginia.
LUCINDA CRADDOCK was born at Patrick County, Virginia, circa 1852.³ Conflicting evidence states that Lucinda was born at Virginia circa 1854.³⁴ Lucinda died on 8 Mar 1935.³⁷ Her body was interred at Patrick County, Virginia, at A.J. Martin Cem.³⁷
In 1932, Lucinda applied for a Civil War widow's pension, stating she had no income and was "supported by my son Bishop Martin.".

iii. JOHN ANDERSON MARTIN was born at Patrick County, Virginia, in 1850.³ He, son of Giles Martin and Sarah Arnold, married Mary Victoria Hundly, daughter of William Hundley and Sallie (Hundley), on 8 Apr 1874 at Patrick County, Virginia.³
MARY VICTORIA HUNDLY was born at Henry County, Virginia, in 1858.³
