1850 Census St Joseph County, Indiana Irish Families

There were 142 individuals born in Ireland living in St Joseph County Indiana in 1850, and they were distributed throughout the 13 Townships in the area. The highest percentage was found in Mishawaka Penn Township with 45, followed by Clay Township with 41 in which 17 were religious affiliates with the University of Notre Dame. Penn Township had 15, Portage Township 13, Harris Township 8, and the more distant Liberty, Union, Center, German and Green Townships having the rest. There were no documented Irish families living in Lincoln, Madison or Olive Township when the 1850 St. Joseph County Indiana Census was conducted

In the following sections I will document the Irish born Immigrants living in the different townships in and around South Bend in the 1850 Census. I will also include their family members although many were born in the United States. The 1850 census doesnt document the relation of members in the same household to the head of the house like later census records do. The 1850 census included a section entitled Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read and write. I will document this in a "read/write" section with a no if it was reported on a specific individual.
