The Edward Fogarty and Rose Kennedy Family of South Bend, Indiana: An Analysis of this Irish Family's Migration from Ireland to South Bend Indiana and Beyond in South Bend St. Joseph Church and Sacred Heart Church Records, Census and other Resources
Edward and Rose Fogarty appear to have arrived in the South Bend, Indiana area sometime before May 7, 1866 when son Edward was baptized at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. They resided in the City of South Bend in Ward 4 on July 9, 1870 when the census was conducted. Their migration trail from Ireland appears to begin here in the United States with an 1832 arrival (according to the 1900 US Census). Their journey took them to Tennessee where their daughter Catherine was born around 1861, to Chicago, Illinois where daughter Anna was born in 1864 and finally to South Bend, Indiana around 1866 where their son Edward was born. This young Edward goes on to become the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana beginning in 1902.
The objective of this compilation is to try to establish the earliest possible evidence of this family in the United States through all available resources. I would love to hear from anyone who believes that they may be a descendent of this family so that we can work together to find their origins in Ireland and migration trail to the U.S. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with Ireland and U.S. marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical resources. Research Observations and Analysis:
Fortunately, the St Joseph Church 1880 Census of Parishioners provides Rose Fogarty's maiden name- Kennedy. I have been able to trace the core of this Irish family from the 1870 South Bend Census through the 1900 South Bend Census in which Edward Fogarty is listed as a widow. I have yet to find his death record, but Rose appears to have died September 29, 1891 at the age of 62 according to St Joseph Church Burial Records. In the process of compiling the information for this page, I came across an article in the University of Notre Dame's "Notre Dame Magazine" that describes an Archaelogy project headed by Deb Rotman on Notre Dame Avenue. This is a must read article if you are a descendent of this family as the archaelogical dig takes place at 602 N Notre Dame Avenue the former home site of Edward Fogarty and Rose Kennedy! Descendents of the Fogarty's definitely have the luck of the Irish to have their ancestor's property chosen for this research! Martin Brennan and Catherine Corcoran, my second great grandparents, resided just down the street at 1015 N. Notre Dame Avenue and their son William H Brennan at 915 N. Notre Dame Avenue. There was an interesting article appearing in the South Bend Tribune on November 13, 1905 describing Mayor Edward J Fogarty's intent to fully enforce laws that would "clear South Bend of some of the characters which for some time past have been in the habit of loafing around the saloons and questionable resorts." He went on to include women of "questionable character loafing about the streets dressed in a Loud or gaudy manner." (South Bend Tribune, 1905).
