Corcoran Families (and all variations of the Surname) Identified in the Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England Census Records, Possible Origins in Ireland and Links Between the Census Years

The Surname Corcoran as well as numerous variations such as Corcran, Cochrane, are scattered throughout the different districts of the Wolverhampton England Census Records. The majority of these Corcoran families are documented as being born in Ireland. Some of the later census years begin giving counties of birth. It is my objective in this section to analyze the various Corcoran Families found in the Wolverhampton Civil Parish, Staffordshire England Census records between 1841 and 1901 to look for possible origins and connections between the lines. This is a work in progress and will be added to as I work my way through the census.

It is clear in the research I have done thus far in the Wolverhampton Census records that at least one Corcoran family originated from the Ballinamore area of County Mayo, Ireland and one from County Roscommon (likely Castlerea). The authors who have done extensive research and published their work on the Irish in Wolverhampton identify a strong contingent of Irish coming from Counties Mayo, Roscommon and Galway and in particular from Castlerea, an area in close proximitry to the three counties. An obvious immigration trail was created from these counties to Wolverhampton and my goal is to see how the Gahagans, Corcorans, Brennans and possibly Coffeys may have been related.

I am in the process of identifying all Irish Surnames documented in the 1851 Wolverhampton Civil Parish, Wolverhampton Eastern Registration District, Districts 1a- 1z plus the Union Workhouse in My Irish-England section. Ancestry.com has two subregistration districts in this census year, Wolverhampton Eastern and Wolverhampton Western. There appear to be a significant number of people living in Wolverhampton Civil Parish who were born in Shropshire, England. At this point my focus will be on Wolverhampton Eastern Subregistration District where I have found both Gahagans and Corcorans. I will pull the Corcorans identified in these districts and add them to this compilation.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). They are something to build upon and prove. I would welcome all feedback on this effort. Only through input from other Corcorans will we find how we might all be related.
