Mallow Archaeological & Historical Society

Welcome to Journal No. 23. Perhaps the words of the writer, John Osborne, applies to local history enthusiasts when he wrote “they spend their time looking forward to the past.” Although, at the beginning of most years we are apprehensive that there will not be enough suitable material from which to compile a journal, but our apprehensions are always misplaced. We always enjoy delving into past events so that we can produce yet another volume.

Our aim, as ever, is to inform as well as entertain, occasionally even to amuse. This year's collection of articles covers a wide range of topics, people and places. We are careful to avoid a headlong rush into nostalgia, to lament the way things used to be—still there is a tremendous insight to be gained by reading the people's accounts of how life was lived in small-town and rural Ireland in the centuries gone by. Much of local history can only be fully learned by looking into the life experiences of individual men and women; it is their stories that paint a large part of the picture of what life was like.

We have a slightly diminished band of writers, but we warmly welcome valuable contributions from some new authors in this edition; hopefully they have caught the bug. Thanks to so many of our readers who comment, offer advice and criticism—all is welcome, keep it coming.

The index to Journals one to 21 was published earlier this year and is now available locally. This has already proven to be a valuable asset to anyone searching for information on a topic, person or place mentioned in the first 21 journals.
