Peter Joseph Klinkhammer

The priest we haven't been able to place is  Father Peter Joseph "Klinkhammer"  who was reported to have visited a relation in Michigan in 1920 or 1930's and he was at that time living in Racine Wisconsin. We have a picture of a priest with some of our Klinkhammers in Canada taken about this time which must be this Peter.

Archdiocese of Milwaukee Dec 20 1977

Dear Father

It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of

Reverend Peter J Klinkhammer
on Monday, December 19, 1977

Father Klinkhammer was born in Racine Wisconsin on May 31 1896. He prepared for the priesthood at St Mary's Mission House Techny Ill. and at Salesianum and was ordained on February 1 1925, in the seminary chapel by Bishop Paul Rhode.

Father Klinkhammer's entire priestly life was marked by the cross of poor health, suffering as he did from chronic, respiratory disease. Following ordination, he served at parishes in Monroe, Racine, and Montello before being named Pastor of St John's parish, Lamartine, with the mission of St Mary's Eldorado, in 1931. Father was transferred to the pastorate of St Michael's parish, Dotyville, in 1937, and to St Andrew's Parish, Le Roy, in 1941.

In 1942, Father Klinkhammer was appointed chaplain at St Joseph's Hospital, West bend, where he served only a short time before being forced to take a leave of absence because of ill health. In 1951 he returned to Milwaukee to assume the chaplaincy at Divine Savior High School.

Following a sick leave in 1954, Father moved to the Diocese of Tucson where he served as pastor of several parishes including Our Lady of the Valley, Green Valley, Arizona, from where he retired in the early 1960's.

In retirement Father Klinkhammer lived in Tucson Arizona

A celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Holy Name Church, G1509 Grand Avenue, Racine, on Friday, December 23 1977, at 11:00 am.

Father Klinkhammer will lie in the state at the Draeger Funeral Home, 1910 Taylor Avenue, Racine, after 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 22 and after 9:00 am in Holy Name Church on Friday.

Members of the Purgatorial Society will please offer the customary three masses for the repose of his soul. May he rest in peace.

Respectfully yours in Christ

The GRASSROOTS HISTORY OF RACINE COUNTY (WI)
[note: GRASSROOTS was published in 1978]

KLINKHAMMER, Rev. Philip (pg. 164) -- [included in section on Holy Name Church, excerpted as follows] "In ...1884, there was established in Racine, the German Catholic Church, under the name Holy Name of Jesus Parish. This parish is a branch of St. Mary's Parish, with parishioners numbering 130, mainly poor families. ...On the corner of Fifteenth and Villa a school was built, and on the second floor of the school -- a church began and with God's help finished.... Parish sons who have become priests are: REVEREND PHILLIP KLINKHAMMER, Monsignor George N. Orth, Monsignor Theodore F. Thome, Reverend Louis Gales, ..."

Philip is no doubt a misprint for Peter as his family lived close to this church and he was also buried from this church so would have been a "Parish Son".
