The Whitewater Valley Genealogical Association met September 20, 2011 at the Trinity Episcopal Parish House. The meeting was conducted by Pat Cudworth, President.

A thank you was read from Ashley Rader for sponsoring the grand champion 4-H genealogy plaque. A thinking of you card was signed for Janie Miller.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved. Karen Creamer reported a checking account balance of $113.66 and savings of $2424.

Heritage Days will be October 22 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The genealogy club will be in the Indiana Room to assist with genealogy research. We will have exclusive use of the computer lab from 5 to 7 p.m. Family information can be put on a USB flash drive for those that want them. John Johnson made the motion that the club buy USB flash drives for about $7.50 each and sell them for $10. Motion carried. A couple of these could be given as door prizes. Heritage Days will also include tours of Elmhurst, city tours and two cemetery tours with the last one being at dusk.

Curtis Garrett suggested we could put together information for “Genealogy 100”. There would be a cost to cover the material. It would contain basic information on how to start your genealogy then lead you into computer research. Some thought this might be a good idea for spring possibly through the community college program . This idea was tabled in order to give enough time to prepare the information plus there won’t be enough room at the library to do it October 22 as the book sale will be going on that day.

Pat Cudworth reminded everyone that October is National Family History month. The November meeting will be a Thanksgiving Gathering and a sign-up sheet was available for members to sign up for what they are bringing. One idea was that we could dress up in old clothes – something to think about.

Mike Sparks, chairman of the 2013 bicentennial gave the program. Before he began the bicentennial program he mentioned that the Whitewater Valley Railroad Pumpkinliner is also October 22. He drives one of the tractors and in talking with visitors he finds that most of the ones riding the train are from out of town and we have great opportunities to show off our town.

He told that most everyone that attended the sesquicentennial in 1963 will tell you that the parade was the one thing that everyone remembers. It was a 3-hour parade, starting at 30th Street, going down Grand to 3rd Street, then up Park Road to 30th Street. The parade brought around 50,000 people to Connersville. The parade in 2013 will be July 6. There is a committee that will be giving seminars and training sessions on building floats. The committee has experience working on floats for the Rose Bowl Parade.

In 1963 the pageant was unique and was a narrated history of Connersville with over 7,000 people attending. There were 500 people in the cast and lasted 6 nights. It was put on by Rogers Production Company. . Mike has the original director’s copy of this pageant.

A pioneer village is being planned which could become a major tourist attraction after the bicentennial. One of the favored places for this would be at Elmhurst north of the drive. The village could actually be back in the trees to give it a more normal setting.

The bicentennial will be kicked off with a theme of “Race to Connersville’s Bicentennial.” There are several race type activities in the works.

This is not a bicentennial just for Connersville. It is all inclusive to include not only the city but county and surrounding areas. There will also be youth activities. The celebration will be 2 days longer than the 1963 event. Mike compared the plans for the bicentennial to working on a house - one room at a time. The celebration will come at the same time as the 100th anniversary of Roberts Park.

Planning meetings are held 2nd & 4th Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Miller Building.
