May 17, 2011 The Whitewater Valley Genealogical Association met May 17, 2011 at the Trinity Episcopal Parish House. In the absence of the president and vice president, Pat Summan , Secretary conducted the meeting. The minutes of the April meeting were approved. Karen Creamer forgot the treasurer�s report but said there had been no changes since last meeting. Jim Wicker reported that he is still transcribing letters � One from Ned Cotton to Harry McFarlan, 2 letters to Dr. Hall and one dated 1928 to Mrs. McFarlan. He also showed the brochure that is now available of the barn quilts in Fayette County. Member Updates: President Pat Cudworth is having problems with allergies. Linda Mahan reported that her son is doing marvelous after 4 months of therapy. No one has transcribed newspapers obits this month but Karen said she planned to this week. Ron Wood reported for the bicentennial. He listed some of the events that are being approved. He is planning an archeology dig possibly where the McCombs Pottery Shop was. That lot is vacant now but in 2 years there may be something on it. There will be something for everyone to do in the 10 day celebration. Pat reported that she had e-mailed Donna Schroeder about Heritage Days to be October 22. Donna responded that HCI would like to do the tours. One tour would be of City Cemetery with individuals portraying people who are buried there. She already has volunteers for the little girl at the doll house, a drummer boy and his grandmother. She would like for us to take care of the genealogy part. Karen will check with the library about using their meeting room for our activities. At the next meeting a committee will be named for this event. Pat reported that the flyer for the history book that is being written should be done in the next couple of weeks. There will be an article in the newspaper followed by the flyer inserted in the paper. Sandy Brown reported for the nominating committee. The slate of officers for 2011-2012 is President Pat Cudworth, Vice President John Johnson, Secretary Pat Summan and Treasurer Karen Creamer. There were no further nominations and nominations were closed. Suggestions for possible programs were Barb Harcourt on Quaker Women, lock in at clerks office and recorders office, grave witching, Jeannie Regan Dinnius from DNR about cemeteries and Time Line. We could also continue with members telling about a member of their family. A nice project is in store for City Cemetery. There are going to be markers installed near the soldiers circle. There will be one marker for each township and names will be inscribed of those that served in wars prior to WW 1. The names are being taken from the DAR booklet. When the idea was presented to the City Council, a committee was named for this. Much of the work and materials are being furnished free of charge but the committee will still need $5,000 to $6,000 for the project. Inasmuch as we are at the end of our year, dues are due for next year. An audit committee consisting of Doug and Sandy Brown will audit the treasurer�s books. We didn�t get our payment made in time to the post office for the lock box. We can get the same box number back but we need to find the second key as the lock has been changed on the box. Karen is going to look in the treasurer�s things at home and see if it is there. (it was) Jim Wicker said that the storage cabinet where we have been keeping our books etc. is needed by the church for storage. There is a small cabinet with doors on it at the Methodist Church that he can get. Kathy Keller told of the history of the German Presbyterian Church and how many times the name and denominations have changed. Sandy Brown told of going to a wedding in Cincinnati and looking up the address of where one of her family members lived. It turned out that the house was just a little over a mile from their hotel. Karen Creamer went to the Dearborn County Historical Society annual meeting at Bright, Indiana. The program was Destination Imagination which consisted of 7 students. They adopted a cemetery as their project. In their presentation to the historical society they had tombstones made of foam board that looked like granite markers. This group has won the state division and are now entered in National competition. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Karen Creamer had refreshments at this meeting and John Johnson will have refreshments at the next meeting which is June 21.
