Understanding Wells County's Rural Address System Thanks to Paul Bender for taking the time to explain it! It was created many years ago by Purdue Civil Engr., attempting to put Indiana on a uniform road numbering system. Other states may differ. The starting point roads are named Division and Meridian. Meridian Road runs east-west through the center of the county, and Division Road runs north-south dividing the two tiers of townships. For example: The address "200 West - 1000 South" means this is located on county road 1000 which is 10 miles south of Meridian Road. The 200 West means 2 miles west of Division Road. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hints from the webmaster: Not explicitly stated, but I believe that as a general rule, each "100" is 1 mile. You may also see it denoted 200W 1000S, or even backwards - 1000S 200W. The order doesn't seem to matter. (Please correct me if I'm wrong!) Also, I found it easier to read it "200 West on 1000 South" because it gave me a road (1000 S) to start with. Then it was just a matter of figuring out where on the road 200 W was. Good luck!
