MARTHA B.(L.) PHIPPS: She was born on July 26, 1907 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH.[1] She married ORVILLE J. MELCHING(son of Albert and Carrie(Kline) Melching) on April 27, 1929[2] in Independence, Kenton Co., KY.[3] He was born on Oct. 14, 1909 in Bluffton, Wells Co., IN.[4] He died on July 12, 1976 in Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., IN[5] and was buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ossian, Wells Co., IN.[6] She died on May 19, 1982 in Ossian, Wells Co., IN and was buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. They had the following children:[7]

Martha is the daughter of:[8]

 

LOUELLA(LOU ELLA) PHIPPS: She was born on May 19, 1886 probably in Mercer Co., OH. She died on April 18, 1964 at the Clinic Hospital in Bluffton, Wells Co., IN and was buried in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Bluffton, Wells Co., IN.[9] Louella got pregnant and no one in the family knew who was Martha’s father but according to one source her father was listed as STEVE B. BELL of Jefferson Township, Mercer Co., OH.[10] Louella did marry Orris Huffman at Ostego, Allegan Co., MI on Sept. 9, 1925.[11] She only had one daughter:

WILLIAM JOSEPH PHIPPS: He was born on Feb. 11, 1841 at Ft. Recovery, Mercer Co., OH.[13] He is listed in the household of his brother, John, and listed as, “age 25, born in Ohio, and a laborer” in the 1870 Census of Wilson Co., KS.[14] He is listed as age 39 in the 1880 Jay Co., IN Census.[15] He married first to Mary Ann Scott on Dec. 31, 1871 in Jay Co., IN.[16] She was born on April 8, 1850 in Indiana and died on Feb. 1, 1882 in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., IN and is buried in the Westchester Cemetery.[17] He then married LOVINA KNOX(dau. of John and Elizabeth Knox) in Celina, Mercer Co., OH on Oct. 26, 1882 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Celina, Mercer Co., OH.[18] She was born on Aug. 17, 1845[19] and died on Nov. 24, 1896 in Celina, Mercer Co., OH. She is buried in the North Grove Cem., Celina, Mercer Co., OH[20] She was married before to John Richey in 1866 and he was dead by 1880 as she was living in Celina, Mercer Co., OH.[21] He enlisted in Co. H 152nd OH Infantry on May 2, 1864[22] and he was honorably discharged from the regiment on Sept. 2, 1864 at Camp Dennsion, OH. He was described as “age 19, 6’1/2”, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, occupation farmer.” In his pension he described the following, “at or near White Sulpher Springs, WVA in June 1864 on a march from Lynchburg, VA to Cumberland, MD I became utterly exhausted unable to march and was taken in charge of the surgeon and was found to have the measles and from then on through the whole summer I was sick with Diarrhea and weak eyes and general weakness.” He was however listed as present on the muster roll of June 30, 1864 at Cumberland, MD. He also stated that he just had the given name of William until he was baptized in the Catholic Church and they gave him the middle name of Joseph.[23] He lived in Navajo, Indian Territory in 1890.[24] He moved to Wells Co., IN from Celina, Mercer Co., OH in 1910. He died on April 27, 1917 in Bluffton, Wells Co., IN and is buried in the Elm Grove Cem., Bluffton, Wells Co., IN. He fathered the following children:[25]

 

BY MARY A.SCOTT:

 

NAOMI(she was b. on April 13, 1873 probably in Jay Co., IN. She died on Oct. 28, 1882 in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., IN and is buried in the Westchester Cemetery.[26])

 

ROBERT S.(he was b. on Oct. 30, 1874 probably in Jay Co., IN. He died on Aug. 4, 1876 in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., IN and is buried in the Westchester Cemetery.[27])

 

MARY E.(she was b. about 1877 in Jay Co., IN.[28] She married George Blauser and was living in Freemont, IN in 1917[29] and in Jamestown Twp., Steuben Co., IN in 1920, age 44.[30] She died in 1941 in Steuben Co., IN and is buried in the Jamestown Cemetery. Her tombstone inscription reads, “1876-1941 daughter of William.”[31] She was possibly previously married to Joseph Knox – SEE MRS. ALBERT KRILL BELOW)

 

MARIA D.(she was b. on March 25, 1879 in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., IN. She died on July 2, 1883 in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., IN and is buried in the Westchester Cemetery.[32])

WILLIAM H.(born in 1884 in Bryant, Jay Co., IN. He died single on March 11, 1907 in Riverside, Colorado and is buried in the North Grove Cem., Celina, Mercer Co., OH)

THE FOLLOWING WAS LIVING WITH WILLIAM J. PHIPPS WHEN HE DIED IN 1917:

MRS. ALBERT KRILL(she was born on July 25, 1894 in Greeley, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Mary E. (Phipps) Knox, she married Albert Krill on Aug. 9, 1914 in Angola, IN, she died on May 7, 1958 in the Wells County Hospital, Bluffton, Wells Co., IN[33], she was listed as his granddaughter, living in Bluffton, IN in 1917)

 

 

 

William is the son of:[34]

 

SAMUEL PHIPPS: He was born between 1806-1810[35] in PA or OH. He married ELIZABETH HEDRICK[36] about 1833. She was born about 1815 possibly in OH and she died after 1880[37] probably in Mercer Co., OH. They lived in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH in 1836[38] and then Samuel bought land in Mercer Co., OH on Sept. 4, 1838 and again on Oct. 10, 1840. Then sometime in 1856 this family moved to Centre Township, Decatur Co., IA.[39] They are also located in Eden Township, Decatur Co., IA in 1860[40] but they moved back to Mercer Co., OH about 1863 as their son, William, enlisted in the 152nd OH Infantry on May 2, 1864. He died on March 12, 1879 and is buried in the Green Mound Cemetery, Recovery Township, Mercer Co., OH.[41] They had the following children:[42]

 

HANNAH(born in Jan. 1834, she married John Scott on March 26, 1853[43] and she died on Aug. 10, 1880 in Mercer Co., OH[44])

 

MARIAH DOROTHY(she was born on Feb. 27, 1836 in Franklin Co., OH, she married Alexander Anderson on April 6, 1856 in Decatur Co., IA, she died on March 17, 1924 in Chapman, Dickinson Co., KS[45])

 

JOHN(was born about 1838 in OH, possibly fought in the Civil War from Iowa[46])
