Washington was established on December 21, 1813, it's county seat is Salem. It was named for U.S. President George Washington.

It has 13 townships which are: Brown, Franklin, Gibson, Howard, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Pierce, Polk, Posey, Vernon and Washington. About 1802 there was a man named Frederick Royce living among the Ox Indians at a place known as the Lick, two miles east of Salem. He is probably the first settler to the area.
