Holladay Cemetery Project
This cemetery is located at the corner of
CR-1000 E. and New Castle Road in Sheffield township.
Saturday April 17, 2004
On a visit last fall of 2003 we discovered
evidence of three tombstones on this little hill at this family cemetery. After working the grounds
over this Saturday with the Holladay family and a few volunteers, we found five family tombstones
in this cemetery. Four stones are standing up again
and with some luck later we hope to have their
William Holladay restored too. It was a wonderful
spring workday finding and repairing these
family monuments. THANK YOU you all for helping out, it certainly was a warm April day.

With a little patience we found a single row
pattern, most of the missing pieces,
and two other infant stones. We were thrilled
to find all their footstones too.

Now at the end of our workday, you can
view some of the Holladay family cemetery again standing on top of this raised
area in this corner field.
The question is: are there more
missing? Yes, that's what we have heard. Even
the road may be over more stones. And some may have been
removed. So for now we have 2 Holladay + 3 Willcox

At some point later that month. Someone repaired the stone
for William and it is now standing. The information is still
missing on his tombstone. They also added wire and post
behind these tombstones
to protect them. Can't say I blame them.

A partial bio from the Tippecanoe
Co., Indiana Biographical record. Page 721-722.
William and Catherine (McCalip/MCKILLIP) Halliday, were born reared
and married in the State of North Carolina. Some years after their marriage, they removed
to Fayette County, Ohio, the family and household goods being conveyed the entire distance by
pack animals. In 1828 the moved from LaFayette to Tippecanoe County by
team and wagon, and settled in Sheffield Township on the land occupied
by the subject of this sketch. The father had made two trips to the county
previous to his settlement here. He died on the old homestead in Sheffield Township
in 1841, aged about fifty-five years. His widow survived him many years,
dying at the old homestead in her eighty-seventy year. They were the parents
of eleven children named, as follows; Nancy, Hannah, Rachel, Sarah, John,
Samuel, James and Daniel, (twins), Simeon and Lena (twins), and William.
This John and Nancy McKillip family are buried at Pretty Prairie cemetery
in Tippecanoe Township, Could he be the father of Catherine above.
