Herman Eugene Wiseman

Herman Eugene Wiseman, residing on Inwood Road, South Bend, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2002 in Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend at the age of 80. He was born June 16, 1921 in Jasonville, IN; as the son of George Herman and Myrtle Blanche (Johnson) Wiseman, and was the youngest of four brothers, Temple Harry and Ralph, and one sister Josephine. His father was a school teacher. The family moved to Chrisman, IL in 1924. He went to grade school in a two room school house in Chrisman. He attended high school in Ridgefarm, IL. His father died in 1934 and Herman quit school six weeks before he was to graduate. In 1939 his Aunt & Uncle persuaded his mother to come to Toledo, Ohio to work at the State Hospital where they worked. In late fall of 1939, Herman decided to go to Toledo. He stoppped in South Bend to visit his brother Temple and family. They talked him into staying and finishing school, so in January 1940 he went back to school. They got acquainted and started going to church and school functions together. Herman never made it to Toledo.

 

Herman and Ruth graduated the same day, June 6, 1940. After graduation, Herman got a job at the Power Plant where Ruth's father worked. They became engaged in December 1940 and were married June 1, 1941 in Mishawaka. On October 10, 1942 they were blessed with a baby girl, Carolyn Elaine. Herman went into the Army in November 1942. Their daughter Carolyn died in January 1944. He was in a VA Hospital in Pasadena, CA with Rheumatic Fever. He did however, get to come home for the funeral. He received a medical discharge in March 1944, and after about a year went back to work at the Power Co. He began selling insurance in 1956. In 1963 he joined his brother and nephew and began their own agency, Thompson-Wiseman Insurance Agency which he retired from in January 1984. After retirement they spent the winters in Texas in the Valley.

 

Mr. Wiseman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Ruth Wiseman, two daughters, Jeretta Sue (James) King of South Bend, Beth Valeen Underwood of Lamesa, CA. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Troy Allen Underwood, Jennifer Christine Dover, Jean Ellen Smith, and Joy Rebecca Roach; and three great-granchildren, Cierra Beth Underwood, Marisa Patience Roach and Amber Nicole Dover. He was preceded in death by a grandson Jamey who was killed on his bicycle at age 13. Mr. Wiseman was a member of Apostolic Temple Church for more than 62 years where he served as a Deacon for many years.

 

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2002 in Apostolic Temple. Rev. Peter Rowe, and Rev. David Rowe will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Monday in Palmer Fuenral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the Church. Memorial contributions in memory of Herman Eugene Wiseman may be offered to Apostolic Temple Youth Center.
