Ernest J. Wilhelm, 69, of 422 E. LaSalle Ave., professor emeritus of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a three-week illness. 

A former senior research scientist for the New Jersey Zinc Co., Professor Wilhelm joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1938, retiring in 1971.  He held six U.S. patents for inventions of electrolytic cells and batteries.  An Indiana registered professional engineer, he was a member of numerous professional and academic organizations.

Born Nov. 5, 1904, in South Bend, he had resided here most of his life. 

On Sept. 1, 1930, in South Bend, he married Marguerite Vanden-Bossche, who survives.  Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. David S. Brucker of Carmel, N.Y., and Mrs. Robert C. Beutter of Mishawaka, nine grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Moontz of South Bend. 

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd. 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Notre Dame.  Rev. James Buckley, C.S.C., will officiate. 

Entombment will be in Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum.  A rosary will be recited at 7:15 p.m. today by the Ladies of Notre Dame.  Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Notre Dame Engineering Building fund.
