SOUTH BEND - Mildred C. Wheatley, 78, of Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton, formerly of South Bend, died at 1:40 a.m. today in the nursing home. Mrs. Wheatley was born May 10, 1915, in Twelve Mile, Ind., and lived in South Bend most of her life.

On Sept. 5, 1936, in South Bend, as Mildred C. Young, she married Lewis O. Wheatley. He died Feb. 14, 1992. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce McKenzie of Lafayette, Ind., and Darlene Chambers of New Carlisle; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of Republican Women's Association and former manager of the St. Joseph County Republican Headquarters.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
