Sister M. Francis Borgia Whalen CSC, 89, os St. Mary’s Convent, Notre Dame, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday at SSt. Mary’s Convent, after a lengthy illness. Born Nov. 26, 1885 as Frances Whalen in Graymount, Ill., she entered the Congregation of the Sister of Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on May 6, 1910, coming from Pontiac, Ill. She was received as a novice Aug. 5, 1910, and as a professional Aug. 15, 1912. Professional and community assignments included teaching in secondary schools doing her community life at St. Joseph Academy and St. Joseph High School, South Bend, and at high schools in Anderson and Hammond, and in Illinois, New York, Maryland and Virginia. She resided at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent from 1962 until she took up residence at St. Mary’s Convent in 1972.

 

Friends may call today and Thursday at St. Mary’s Convent Parlors. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Loretto Church, with internment following at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at St. Mary’s.
