SOUTH BEND - Ruth O. West, 86, of St. Paul's Retirement Community, died at 8:29 a.m. Saturday in the nursing home. Mrs. West was a former employee of South Bend Community School Corp. in the Adams High School cafeteria. She was born Aug. 23, 1908, in Marshall County, and lived in South Bend most of her life.

On June 6, 1925, in St. Joseph, as Ruth O. Henderson, she married Clarence P. West. He died in 1987. She is survived by a son, Clarence ''Ed'' of Aurora, Ill.; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; and a sister, Fern Heckaman of South Bend. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place, with burial in Resurrection Garden of First Presbyterian Church, Bonita Springs, Fla. There will be no visitation. Forest G. Hay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the retirement community.
