M. Janet Weis, 72, of Merrillville, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Town Centre Nursing Home, Merrillville. She was born on Aug. 11, 1926, in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of Gerald and May (Doolittle) Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by a sister, Ruth Anne. A Merrillville resident for six years, formerly of South Bend.

She was married on Dec. 27, 1952, in Mishawaka, Ind., to John Christian Weis, Jr., who also preceded her in death on June 1, 1989. She was a 1944 graduate of Mishawaka High School, a 1948 graduate of Purdue University, and she earned her Master's degree in elementary education from Indiana University. She was employed as a school teacher for the Mishawaka School System from 1950 to 1956 and 1969 to 1982 where she taught in the pre-school and kindergarten. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and the Mishawaka Education Association. She is survived by her son, Robert A. (Cindy) Weis of Evansville, Ind.; her daughter, Kristin (James) Bailey of Ogden Dunes, Ind.; her son, Thomas E. (Vicki) Weis of Granger, Ind.; and by seven grandchildren, Joshua and Andrew Weis of Evansville, Lauren, Jordan, and Leslie Bailey of Ogden Dunes, and Adam and Johannah Weis of Granger.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Portage First United Methodist Church, 23637 McCool Road, Portage, Ind., with Rev. Richard Thistle officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, Ind. Visitations were held Friday in the Engel Funeral Home, 2700 Willowcreek Road, Portage, IN 46368. For information please call (219) 762-8595.
