Henry J. Tschida, Sr. (Sept. 24, 1909 - Dec. 23, 1996)

Henry J. Tschida, Sr., 87, of Napier Street in South Bend, Ind. passed away at 6:20 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend.

Mr. Tschida retired from Oliver Corporation in 1970 where he was employed for 29 years as a layout inspector.

Henry was born to John and Anna (Engle) Tschida on Sept. 24, 1909 in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.

On May 29, 1937, he married Helen J. Pinter at St. Stephen Catholic Church in South Bend, Ind. She survives along with one daughter, Carolyn A. (Phillip) Helman of South Bend; one son, Henry J. Tschida, Jr. of Gilbert, Ariz.; one sister, Agnes Wamser of South Bend; and two grandchildren, Jennifer L. Tschida of Gilbert, Ariz. and William P. Helman, Jr. of South Bend.

Henry was preceded in death by four brothers, Anton Tschida, Frank Tschida, Edward Tschida, and Joseph Tschida (fraternal twin); and a sister, Elizabeth Churchill.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Catholic Church in South Bend, with Rev. Thomas F. Lemos, C.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Ind. where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Henry was a founding member of the South Bend Civic and Democratic Club. He belonged to St. Stephen Church where he was a lifetime member of the ushers club, and a member of the St. Stephen Society at the old St. Mary's Church on Scott Street.

Henry was drafted by the St. Louis Brown's baseball team where his career ended with a broken wrist. He continued working with baseball players at St. Stephen Grade School and helping coach at South Bend Catholic High School.
