SOUTH BEND - Maria Thurzo, 89, of Swanson Drive, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday in Regency Place Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Thurzo retired from the University of Notre Dame after 20 years of service. She was born July 6, 1905, in Senta, Yugoslavia, and lived in South Bend since 1951, coming from Yugoslavia.

As Maria Balogh, she married Joseph Thurzo. He died in 1961. She is survived by a daughter, Clara M. Kovach of South Bend; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or any charity.
