Marie Baert Thomas

MISHAWAKA - Marie Baert Thomas, 94, passed away Saturday, April 17, in Hospice House, South Bend. Marie was born on February 16, 1916, in Mishawaka, to Stanley and Stefonia (Stankiewicz) Hulecki. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ann Hulecka Harner; and by two brothers, Peter and John Hulecki. On August 31, 1935, in Mishawaka, she married Richard P. Baert, who preceded her in death on November 7, 1988. On June 29, 1996, in Mishawaka, she married Merle Thomas. Surviving are her children, Jeanne M. Baert of Austin, TX, and Paul (Karen) Baert of Howell, MI; six grandchildren, Lucas (Megan) Pauwels, Lara (David) Pauwels, Monica (Jeremy) Tupa, Kristin (Richard) Keith, Brian (Joan) Baert and Kevin (Traci) Baert; 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Claire and Noah Pauwels, Kathryn Keith, Thomas, Meredith, Collin and Trevor Baert, Abigail Pauwels and Tyler Tupa. Marie was a Mishawaka High School graduate; she attended classes at IUSB and Holy Cross. She was a member of the Rosary Society at St. Joseph Catholic Church, was a former member of Elkhart Moose, a former member of the Eberhart Golf course on the Tuesday and Friday league, and a member of Mishawaka High School alumni. Marie worked for Bendix as secretary for the missile plant manager, retiring in 1973. Family and friends may visit on Thursday, April 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, April 23, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111, Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility, 20531 Darden Road, South Bend, IN 46637.
