Helen Spears

SOUTH BEND - Helen (Moore) Spears, 88, of Healthwin Hospital, formerly of Lincoln Way West, died at 8:35 p.m. Friday in the hospital after an illness. Mrs. Spears retired in 1973 as a teacher and librarian with South Bend Community School Corp. after 17 years of service. She previously worked at the South Bend Public Library.

 

She was born June 10, 1906, in Naugatuck, Conn., and lived here most of her life. Surviving are a son, James A. of South Bend; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

 

She was a member of Epworth Memorial Methodist Church, American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Nations Association, St. Joseph County Genealogical Society, American Heritage Round Table, DePaul University Alumni Association, and past president of Goodwill Auxillary. She was a charter member of St. Joseph County Mental Health Association; was host of a radio program, Book Review of the Air; and drove the first bookmobile in South Bend.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Burial will be in Mishawaka City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Goodwill, the South Bend Public Library or the church.
