Joseph J. Sorocco Sr.

SOUTH BEND - Joseph John Sorocco Sr., 88, passed away on October 14, 2009, at Hospice House in Elkhart. Joe was born on March 10, 1921, in South Bend, IN, to Marguarite (Cardone) and Dominick Sorocco. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael and Anthony Sorocco; and by a sister, Helen Troutner. On February 25, 1941, he married Delta Marie (Hutchison) Sorocco, who died in 2007. He is survived by a son, Joseph J. (Mary Ann) Sorocco Jr. of South Bend; a daughter, Connie (David) Wiseman of Granger; four grandchildren, Douglas (Kristen) Sorocco of Oklahoma City, Leslie (Neil) Miller of South Bend, Derek (Amy) Wiseman of Granger and Jared (Jessica) Wiseman of South Bend; and his great-grandchildren, Karl Sorocco, Garrett Miller, Mason and Piper Wiseman, Ethan Wiseman, Timothy and Tyler Seward. He is also survived by his brother, William Sorocco, and sisters, Lucy VanOverwaele, Mary Hojara, Angeline Nowaczewski and Betty Lou DeRoo. During WW II, Joe served in the U.S. Army as an MP (military policeman) and was stationed at MacDill AFB in Florida. He worked at Bendix Corporation for over 40 years in several capacities, including supervision and as a union steward. Joe was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5570, Bendix Local #9 Retirees Club, and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, October 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. in The McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 State Road 23. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, in St. John the Baptist Church, 3526 St. John's Way, South Bend, with visitation one hour prior in the church.
