At 12:37 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, Father Jeffrey Sobosan, C.S.C., 53, died of cancer in the University of Portland in Oregon. He was born on March 30, 1946, to the late John and Louise (Marier) Sobosan of Chicago, Ill. Father Sobosan is survived by his sister, Julie (William) DeHaven and family of Winter Haven, Fla.

 

After attending elementary school in New York state and in Fort Wayne, Ind., and high school at Bishop Luers in Fort Wayne and Notre Dame High School for Boys in Niles, Ill., he graduated from Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, Ind. in 1964.

 

He professed his first vows at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Jordan, Minn., in August 1965. He received a bachelors degree in history from the University of Notre Dame in 1969 and a M.Th. in 1972. He professed perpetual vows in 1972, followed by ordination to the priesthood on April 7, 1973.

 

After serving as a deacon at Little Flower Parish, Father Sobosan began doctoral studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif. in the fall of 1973. He received his Th.D. in 1977. After teaching one year at Holy Names College, Oakland, Calif., he joined the theology faculty at the University of Portland where he taught until his last illness. He was promoted to full Professor of Theology in 1997. Father Sobosan was recognized as an effective teacher and a highly prolific writer. In addition to his teaching and scholarship, he served as chair of the Department of Theology from 1982 to 86 and as acting chair from 1996 to 97.

 

Viewing began at 11a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in the University of Portland, chapel of Christ the Teacher. A memorial Mass with the university community was offered on Thursday at 5 p.m. Father Sobosan's body will be transported to South Bend for burial. At Notre Dame, there will be a Vigil Service in Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. EST. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow in the Community Cemetery. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
