June Alice Smythe

MISHAWAKA - Mrs. June Alice (Behrndt) Smythe, 83, of Mishawaka, passed away in the home of her daughter early Monday morning following complications of a fall and surgery from a month ago. Mrs. Smythe was born in Adams, Massachusetts, to Franklin "Babe" and Jessie "Jay" (Walling) Behrndt on July 18, 1925. When she was age six the family moved to South Bend for her father to take a job as an engineer at the Bendix Corporation following a short move to California. She graduated from the former South Bend Central High School in the Class of 1943. On February 15, 1969, in the First Presbyterian Church of Mishawaka, she married John Thomas Smythe, who preceded her in death on August 11, 1981. June retired in 1988 after 23 years as an administrative secretary at the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation. June is survived by her daughter, Linda J. (John S.) Maxham of Mishawaka; her grandson, Christopher A. (Monica) Stouffer of LaPorte, IN; a granddaughter, Angela N. (Scott) Draper of South Bend; a great-granddaughter, Amanda J. Lindsey of LaPorte; and a great-grandson, Anthony J. Stouffer of South Bend. June was a member of the South Bend Turners Club where she co-founded and coached the Junior Bowling Program. She was also instrumental in starting the South Bend/Mishawaka Junior Bowling Program. June was inducted into the South Bend/Mishawaka Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1979. Mrs. Smythe enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer having hit a hole-in-one. She loved watching sports of all kinds, but especially Notre Dame sports, the Cubs, the Bulls and Pacers basketball.

 

Friends may call next Monday, Nov. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood Drive at Jefferson, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18th, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
