SOUTH BEND - Bernice P. Smudzinski, 84, formerly of South
Bend, passed away on Thursday, October 30, in Skyline Health Care
Center, Riverhead, NY. Bernice was born on July 3, 1924 in South
Bend to the late Ferdinand and Hattie (Trudzinski) Plonka.
In South Bend, on May 4, 1946, she married Walter A. Smudzinski
Sr. He passed away on August 17, 1986. Also preceding Bernice in
death are brother, Fred Plonka; sister, Anna Lewandowski;
and son-in-law, Randy Wharton. Surviving Bernice is a
daughter, Patricia Wharton of Arlington, VA; a son, Walter
(Victoria) Smudzinski Jr. of Amagansett, NY; five grandchildren,
Brad, Kurt, Jacqueline, Matthew and Andrea; a great-grandson,
Jake; sisters, Stella (Rudy) Pyclik and Irene Szynski
of South Bend; brother, John (Mary Ann) Plonka of South Bend; two
sister-in-laws, Rose Marie Plonka and Alice Smudzinski, both of
South Bend.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on
Monday, November 3, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S.
Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a rosary will be prayed at 4
p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday,
Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will
follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
