Ruth A. Smith, 89, of South Elmer Avenue, South Bend, passed away at 4:51 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, in Hospice House of St. Joseph County.
She was born on September 22, 1915, in South Bend, to Ross and Bernadette (Hoose) Cleghorn Sr., who preceded her in death. Also deceased are two sons, Robert Smith and Roger Smith, and two brothers, Ross Cleghorn Jr. and Richard Cleghorn. On July 3, 1937, in South Bend, Ruth married Edward F. Smith, who passed away on April 22, 1982.
Surviving Ruth are a son, Keith P. (Karen) Smith of South Bend; three daughters, Christine Meyers of Niles, Michigan, Carolyn Willey of Jones, Michigan, Elaine (Sam) Colalillo of New Carlisle; twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha (Raymond) Bilinski of South Bend; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Smith of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Ruth retired in 1977 from J.C. Penney. She was a member of Holy Family Church, the Rosary Sodality and the Harvest House.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, from 3 to 8 p.m. in ST JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, December 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
