SOUTH BEND - Marie E. Aftowski Smith, 72, of Riverside, Calif., formerly of South Bend, died Friday in Loma Linda (Calif.) Medical Center. Mrs. Smith was born April 9, 1923, in South Bend, and lived in Riverside for 35 years.

As Marie Aftowski, she married George Smith. He died Oct. 23, 1995. She is survived by three daughters, Sharon MacAdam of Folsom, Calif., and Debra Smith and Jody Hitt, both of Riverside; two sons, Ronald of Banning, Calif., and Chris of Riverside; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Garbacz, Virginia DeVreese and Patricia Czarnecki, all of South Bend.

Graveside services and burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Riverside National Cemetery. Acheson & Graham Funeral Home, Riverside, is in charge of arrangements. St. Joseph Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
