SOUTH BEND - Irene M. Smith, 89, of Welworth Street, died at 1 a.m. today in her home. Mrs. Smith retired from Studebaker Corp. after 35 years of service. She was born Dec. 1, 1905, in Peoria, Ill., and lived in South Bend since 1925.

On Jan. 23, 1926, in South Bend, as Irene M. Toth, she married Arden P. Smith. He died April 7, 1979. She is survived by a son, Richard A. of South Bend; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Julia E. Short of South Bend. Mrs. Smith attended St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member and Sunday school teacher, and was a former member of the Studebaker Choir.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call two hours before services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of St. Joseph County.
