SOUTH BEND - Esther I. Smith, 86, of Holy Cross Healthcare Center, formerly of 1250 Fairington Circle, South Bend, died at 4 a.m. today at the health care center after an illness. Mrs. Smith retired as a clerk from the city of South Bend.

She was born Oct. 31, 1908, in North Liberty and lived in South Bend since 1959. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley A. Ledbetter of Bullhead City, Ariz.; a son, James W. Zerby of Pueblo West, Colo.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Lute of Walkerton; and a brother, James K. Wood of Yucaipa, Calif. She was a 50-year member and past Matron of North Liberty Eastern Star 290, and a member of North Liberty Church of Christ.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, where the Order of Eastern Star will conduct memorial services at 6:45 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
