Julius L. Smiley (Sept. 15, 1920-Sept. 28, 1998)

TIPPECANOE -- Julius L. "Sam'' Smiley, 78, of 2303 E. 18B Road, died at 5 a.m. Monday in Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane; two daughters, Sherry Benedict of Fort Wayne and Donna Henritze of Westfield, Ind.; three sons, Garry and Milton, both of Warsaw, and Roger of Plymouth; two sisters, Margaret Vander Heyden of South Bend and Carole Florian of Walkerton; and four brothers, Richard and Jim, both of Argos, Paul of Rochester and Kenneth of Logansport. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Argos Bible Church. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today in Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, and one hour before services in the church.

Julius L. Smiley (Sept. 15, 1920 - Sept. 28, 1998)

Julius L. ''Sam'' Smiley, 78, of 2303 E. 18B Road, Tippecanoe, Ind., passed away at 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth, Ind.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1920, in Rochester, Ind., the son of LaVerne and Ethel Smiley. He was a 1940 graduate of Bourbon High School.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and was a member of the Carpenters and Jointers Union Local 615 of Northern Indiana. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1162, Plymouth.

Locally, in Tippecanoe, he had been very active with the Tippecanoe Township Fire Department where he had served as a fireman, and he had also been the chief of the department for several years.

He was married to Betty Jane Peltz on Dec. 13, 1941.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Smiley at home; two daughters, Sherry Benedict and her husband Tom of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Donna Henritze and her husband Bob of Westfield, Ind.; three sons, Garry and his wife Jean of Warsaw, Ind., Roger and his wife Jennifer of Plymouth, and Milton Smiley of Warsaw, Ind.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Vander Heyden of South Bend and Carole Florian of Walkerton, Ind.; and by four brothers, Richard and Jim of Argos, Paul of Rochester and Kenneth Smiley of Logansport, Ind. All mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a grandson, and by both of his parents.

Funeral services for Julius L. ''Sam'' Smiley will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Argos Bible Church, Argos, with Pastor Mark Fishburn officiating. His burial will be held in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Rochester, following the funeral services in the church.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetic Association or to the Marshall County Cancer Fund.
