Louis Smanda Sr.

Louis Smanda, 85, of 821 N. Johnson, died at 2:05 a.m. today at St. Joseph Hospital after a one-week illness. He retired in 1958 from the Studebaker, Corp. where he was a superintendent for 38 years.

 

He was born on Aug. 13, 1893, in South Bend, and lived here all his life. On June 21, 1921, he married Theresa Grontkowski, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Louis Jr., of South Bend and Carl J. of Mishawaka; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

 

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with Rev. Albin L. Hosinski CSC, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home.

 

Smanda was a member of the Holy Name Society of the church, the Foundrymen’s Association and was a veteran of World War I.
