Don T. Simon, 73, died of cancer on Sunday, March 30, in his home in Leland, Mich. Born in South Bend, Ind., in 1930 to Julius and Velma Simon, Don's primary residence was South Bend until 1995. Don was a graduate of Indiana University. He served as a lieutenant in the Army in Korea. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was co-owner and the secretary of Simon Brothers Institutional Foods until he retired after the sale of the company in 1985.

 

Don is survived by six grandchildren, Joey and Abby Simon of Granger, Ind., Nick, Mike and Sally Ann Simon of Mishawaka, Ind., and Roxanne Hilton of Indianapolis, Ind.; his wife, Sylvia Simon; and four of his children and their families, Dana and Teresa Simon of Mishawaka, Arthur and Jeanette Simon of Granger, Trista Simon of Lexington, Ky., and Ame Simon and her husband, Marc Carter of Seattle, Wash. His daughter, Julie Simon Hilton of Indianapolis, preceded him in death. He is also survived by his two black Labradors, Pokey and Sammy.

 

An avid sportsman all his life, he spent his retirement hunting and fishing in Isla Morada, Fla., in the winter, Leland in the summer. For the last few years, he sponsored the Deer Tracks Youth Wish Program, benefiting children with cancer. A graveside service will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery, South Bend, at 3 p.m. today, April 2.
