MISHAWAKA - Ethel R. Richter, 76, of West 6th Street in Mishawaka, passed away following a brief illness at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Memorial Hospital. Ethel was born June 14, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, to Lossie A. and Agnes (Whitacre) Green.

On July 15, 1949, the former Ms. Green was united in marriage to Mr. William D. Richter. William preceded her in death, passing away September 3, 1988. Surviving are her sons, Dean Richter and his fiancée, Karen Dougherty of South Bend, Robert Richter and his wife, Becky of South Bend, and Robert Richter Jr. and his wife, Kristi of Mishawaka. Ethel is also survived by her grandchildren, Sherri Richter of Indianapolis, Nita Minix and her husband, Mark of Granger, Erica "Christy" Sholty and her husband, Jimi of South Bend, Jonathan Richter and Kenny Richter, both of Ohio. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Kayla Morrow, Jacob Richter, Austin Burrows, James Gillian, Samantha Richter and Erica Richter. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William D. Richter Jr. (1991); her brother, Robert Green; and her sister, Helen Zubkoff.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, Indiana. Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend James Bayer of the College Park Missionary Church at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Ethel was employed by the University of Notre Dame from 1969 until her retirement in 2007. For 36 years she served the university and its students as a service associate, and for the last 10 years of her career Ethel was affectionately known as "Gram" to the students in the North Dining Hall where she served as a monitor. Ethel was also a member of the College Park Missionary Church in Mishawaka, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary through V.F.W. Post 360. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even through her illness, she enjoyed reading the Bible and studying her favorite scriptures.
