SOUTH BEND - Arthur C. Rerick Jr., 81, of South Bend passed away at 11:40 a.m. Thursday March 27 in Hospice House of St. Joseph County after an extended illness. Art was born on December 9, 1926, in South Bend and resided in the Michiana area his lifetime.

 

On October 1, 1949, in South Bend, he married the former Joyce E. Nimtz who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Judith L. (Stephan) Johnson of South Bend; three sons, Paul A. (Dianne) Rerick, Joseph A. (Diane) Rerick and Jonathon E. (Tara) Rerick, all of South Bend; also nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren whom he loved and cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Kathryn Sibley Evans.

 

Art retired form Allied-Signal (Bendix Corp.) in 1984, after 29 and a half years of service. He was a senior engineering technician. He attended Riley High School for two years and graduated from Howe Military School in 1944. He also attended Purdue University for two years. Art was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Marine Corps. Mr. Rerick spent eight years with the South Bend Civil Defense Special Police and was the officer in charge for two years. He also worked security at Century Center for 15 years. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Leader and Merit Badge Counselor. He was a charter member of the South Bend R.C. Flying Club, a member of the NRA, and was awarded lifetime Master Marksman for outdoor pistol. He was also a member of the South Bend Racquet Club and a former member of the South Bend Civic Theater. "He was a Legend in his own Time" The family requests, PLEASE, in lieu of flowers, make all memorial contributions to FOP 36, The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., or to the Epworth United Methodist Church.

 

Visitation hours will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday March 30 in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Mr. Rerick will be cremated after visitation hours per his request and honored by his loving family. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday April 5 at Epworth United Methodist Church, 2404 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN 46628. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Rerick family.
