Albert J. Raab

Albert John Raab, 80, of 69205 Garver Lake Road, Edwardsburg, Mich., and a former resident of Vero Beach, Fla., for 17 years, passed away at 11:01 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, while a patient in Saint Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka, Ind.

John was born on March 14, 1920, the son of the late Albert John and Cecelia (Morman) Raab in South Bend, Ind. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Barner, Irene Berta and Rose Trennerry; and by a brother, Charles William Raab.

He had lived in Mishawaka for several years until he moved to Edwardsburg in 1960. John graduated from Central Catholic High School. He and his wife Rosemary were the former owners of Raab's Supermarkets in Mishawaka from 1946-1965, and then they opened Raab's Supermarket in Edwards-burg and Constantine, Mich., from 1967-1991. John was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Edwardsburg, Knights of Columbus of Mishawaka, and the South Bend Elks Lodge. He belonged to the Michigan Grocers Association. He was formerly a member of the Four Lakes Country Club, Edwardsburg, and was an avid golfer. He had been a member of the Edwardsburg Chamber of Commerce, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, 1941-1946.

John was married on May 9, 1946, at St. Monica's Church in Mishawaka to Rosemary E. Kirkpatrick, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, John and Darlene Raab of Edwardsburg and Rev. Ronald P. Raab, C.S.C., of Notre Dame, Ind.; three grandchildren, Timothy William Raab, Christopher Allen Raab and Teri Allison Raab; one great-grandson, Camryn Neal Raab; and by two sisters, Charlotte and Erhart Strohm and Angeline Goeller, both of Mishawaka.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 8, in the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg, where a Rosary wake service will be said at 7:30 p.m. today.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Edwardsburg, by Rev. Ronald P. Raab, C.S.C., of Notre Dame, the son of Mr. Raab, and Rev. David Otto, pastor of the church. Friends will be received in the church for one hour before services on Saturday. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
