Obituary: Evelyn R. (Slisz) Piechorowski

South Bend Tribune
March 13, 1916 -- May 21, 2004

Evelyn R. (Slisz) Piechorowski, 88, of Granger, Ind., passed peacefully away in her sleep at 10 p.m. Friday, May 21, in the Holy Cross Healthcare Center, Dugdale Road, Granger, where she had resided for the last few years.

Evelyn was born on March 13, 1916, in South Bend, Ind., to Kasper and Mary (Andrysiak) Slisz, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 5, 1939, she married Frank A. Piechorowski in St. Adalbert's Church in South Bend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, on Dec. 15, 1985. Also deceased are three brothers, Edmund, Clem and Fred; and four sisters, Irene, Henrietta, Esther and Phyllis.

Evelyn is survived by her sister, Alice Maeyens of South Bend; her son, James F. (Sharon) Piechorowski of Elkhart, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Frank D. of Memphis, Tenn., and Devon D. of Mishawaka, Ind.

Evelyn and Frank were married for nearly 50 years, residing at Fir Road in Granger. They attended St. Pius X Church since moving to Granger in 1955. Their lives were punctuated by hard work, love of family and a zest for life. As a child of the Depression, Evelyn would feed any (man or beast) who wandered too near the home, and was renowned for always having that second turkey on hand for Thanksgiving Day if anyone was really hungry.

She adored her grandchildren and was always on hand when needed to wipe a tear or sing their praises. Her last years were hard but she is happy now in the presence of her God and the love of her husband.

Evie will be missed by all who had the good fortune to cross her path.

A formal Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mom at St. Katherine's of Alexandria in Brzyskorzystew, Poland, the church of our ancestors.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 24, in THE ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, May 25, in the funeral home, followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery, South Bend.
