Sister M. Margaret Phelan CSC, 79, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 11:37 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend, after a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 30, 1899 in Crosspatrick, Ireland, as Margaret Mary Phelan, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on Oct. 20, 1922 after coming from Kilkenny, Ireland. She was received as a novice on Aug. 15, 1923 and made her final profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1925. She taught for several years in Indian and Illinois before graduating from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1930. During her nursing career she was stationed in South Bend and Anderson, Ind. She served as a nurse at St. Mary’s Convent from 1949 until her retirement a few years ago.

 

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, both at St. Mary’s. Friend may call after 4 p.m. today in the convent parlorss where a wake will be at 7 p.m.
